PORSCHE’S success with the all-electric Taycan since its launch about two years ago has, as expected, spawned a new variant, the Cross Turismo. It is presented as a versatile off-road version or its interpretation of the Crossover, but in a lower and sportier version that reflects the brand’s imagery.
In continuing the ‘systematic pursuit’ of Porsche’s path towards sustainable mobility, the Taycan Cross Turismo would have what’s in the sports saloon – an ‘innovative electric drive with 800-volt architecture’. As a Crossover, the Taycan Cross Turismo has a new ‘high-tech’ chassis with all-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension that’s standard to all four models to ensure ‘uncompromising dynamics off-road’.
Porsche says the optional Off-road Design package increases ground clearance by up to 30mm. As such, it means that the Cross Turismo could be driven on demanding off-road terrain. In any case, the standard ‘Gravel Mode’ is designed to improve the suitability of the new model for driving on rough roads.
In visual appearance, the Taycan Cross Turismo closely follows the Mission E Cross Turismo concept study presented at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show: Its silhouette is defined by the sporty roofline sloping downwards to the rear – called a ‘flyline’ by the Porsche designers. Off-road design elements include wheel arch trims, unique front and rear lower aprons and side sills. As part of this design package, the Cross Turismo has special flaps at the corners of the front and rear bumpers and the ends of the sills. Porsche believes these make for a striking exterior as well as providing protection from stone impacts.
Being a crossover, the Taycan Cross Turismo is a bigger vehicle than the sports sedan. The larger dimensional aspect has seen to 47mm more headroom for rear passengers and more than 1200 litres of load capacity that could be assessed via the large tailgate. With these attributes, Porsche believes the Taycan Cross Turismo fits the bill as a ‘true all-rounder’.
The rationale for the new all-eletric Taycan Cross Turismo was best explained by Oliver Blume Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, at the recent world premiere in Hyperbowl Studio, Munich Trade Fair Centre. “In 2019, we sent out a key signal with the debut of our first all-electric sports car. By 2025, half of all the new vehicles we would deliver would have an electrified drive – either fully electric or plug-in hybrid. In 2020, one in three of all vehicles we delivered in Europe had an electric powertrain. The future belongs to electric mobility. With the Taycan Cross Turismo, we’re taking another major step in this direction.”
Keeping in the footsteps of the sports saloon, the Taycan Cross Turismo is made available with four model variants – Taycan 4 Cross Turismo; Taycan 4S Cross Turismo; Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo and Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo. These vehicles might be all electrically powered but the ‘turbo’ models, like the sports saloon, mean that they would be more powerful in electric drive output.
The Taycan Cross Turismo comes with 280kW (380PS) and an overboost power for Launch Control that ups the kick to 350kW (476PS). Its acceleration from 0 to 100km/h takes 5.1 seconds and its top speed is 220km/h. Its ‘mileage’ range (WLTP - Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) is given as 389–456km.
The Taycan S Cross Turismo has more oomph with 360kW (490PS) along with stronger overboost power with Launch Control at 420kW (571PS). That means quicker 0-100km/h acceleration in 4.1 seconds and a higher top speed of 240km/h. Despite that, its distance range (WLTP) remains good at 388–452km/
With the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo it gets more exciting with 460kW (625PS) and an overboost power with Launch Control of 500kW (680PS). Acceleration from 0 to 100km/h is in the super sports car territory at 3.3 seconds while top speed is capped at 250km/h. Again, its range (WLTP) remains good at 395–452km.
And for the flagship Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo, electric power output is rated the same as the turbo model at 460kW (625PS) but it has higher overboost power with Launch Control of 560kW (761PS). Thus, 0-100km/h acceleration is quicker still at 2.9 seconds and top speed stays capped at 250km/h. Its livelier pace means a shorter distance range (WLTP) but still manageable at 388–419km.
Porsche says the Performance Battery Plus, which has a total capacity of 93.4kWh, is always fitted as standard to all the models. To reflect the lifestyle aspect of the Taycan Cross Turismo, new sports accessories were introduced at the global launch; a new carrier for up to three bicycles that Porsche has developed to set ‘the benchmark in package size and handling’.
It could be used universally for different types of bikes. One of its innovative features is that the tailgate could be opened even when the rear carrier is loaded. Porsche also presented two high-quality e-bikes at the same time – eBike Sport and eBike Cross – that reflects ‘timeless design and powerful and sustainable technology’.
The Taycan Cross Turismo would be launched in Malaysia in the second half of 2021. Pre-orders are now available at Porsche Centres nationwide. To find out more and register your interest, visit these dealer websites:
